Notes for setup of PPP on a Macintosh:

  1. Check to make sure you have the right software versions.
  2. This setup guide assumes that you are using Open Transport, which comes standard with Mac OS 7.5 and above on PowerPC-based Macintoshes. If you’re using an older operating system, consider upgrading, or replacing the classic MacTCP networking with Open Transport. Contact me if you need more info, or if you have a pre-PowerPC 68040, 030, 020, or 000 machine (such as any of the Mac II series like the II fx, II ci, SE, LC, etc.).

You should be using Open Transport 1.1.1 or higher. You can check this by opening your TCP/IP control panel, under Apple Menu -> Control Panels -> TCP / IP. Click on the "Info" button at the bottom left. If you aren’t using Open Transport 1.1.1 or higher, download the newer version from Apple’s website (search for Open Transport under the support area). I’m currently using Open Transport 1.1.1 with System 7.5.5 on a PowerMacintosh 7200, so you don’t need to upgrade to OS 8 and above to use Open Transport 1.1.1

If you have a new computer that came with OS 8 or 8.5, don’t worry – your software is already installed and should be all set.

  3. Configure your software.
  4. Open up the TCP/IP control panel (Apple Menu -> Control Panels -> TCP/IP. Set the pop-up box on top to Connect via: PPP. Set the next box to Configure: Using PPP server. IP address, subnet mask, and router address should say <supplied by server>. Under Name Server Addresses, put 128.196.11.233 and 128.196.11.234 on separate lines, and under Additional Search Domains put lpl.arizona.edu and arizona.edu on separate lines. Close the TCP/IP control panel and save changes.

Open the PPP control panel (Apple Menu -> Control Panels -> TCP/IP). You can leave the username and password blank. Enter one of the PIRL dialup phone numbers (621-8427 or 621-4907). Click on Options, then click the Protocols tab, and click on "connect to command line host" and "use terminal window". Under the PPP menu at the top of the screen in the menu bar, select "modem" and choose the correct port, your modem type, whether you want sound on or off, and whether you have a pulse or tone line.

  5. Connect!

Click on the Connect button in the PPP control panel window. The modem will dial, and make some noise…then you'll see a terminal window asking for username and password. Just type in your normal PIRL username and password. Then choose PPP from the menu by typing 2. Click "continue", and you're all done! Now you can use Netscape, Telnet, Fetch, etc. just like you're directly connected to the network. When you're done, just click "Disconnect" in the PPP control panel.

That's all there is to it! If you have any questions, problems, etc. please let me know - send me an email at phillips@lpl.arizona.edu
