Mount Whitney, East Buttress

Matt, Scott, Paul and I got together in August for a climb of the East Buttress of Whitney. It's something I've wanted to do for years, so it was great to find the time and the friends to do it..

In this picture we're above Upper Boy Scout Lake, for the first good views of the hill.

Paul Paul & Mt. Whitney..
Iceberg Lake. I tried swimming in this thing, it was pretty damn cold!

Paul wants to traverse the ridge in the background, I think he's nuts.

Keeler Needle A nice view of Keeler Needle (the one on the right).
Our version of Secor's cover.. Sunrise
Joe Me on First Tower, Matt and Scott are ahead, and a German group is below us roping up for the East Face.
This is me following a nice dihedral pitch above the PeeWee. Note the fresh snow on the ledge below the belay (it's a hundred degrees in Tucson!). Joe
Rainbow Scattered showers do have their beauty. Luckily Ular wasn't aiming for us. Or if he was, he missed..
The obligatory summit photo, The Germans got lost and bailed far below. Around pitch 9, Paul was wishing we had done the same (bailed, that is)!

That's Matt, Paul, me, and Scott.

Summit!
Marmot Meanwhile, back at camp, This fat boy had sampled our food and made a new side door in my tent.

I couldn't fault him the hole in the tent, but the tooth holes in my Thermarest were uncalled for!

Lower Boy Scout Lake on the descent the next day. Ersbacher Ledges are just below.

Note the clear and sunny skies..
