Mount Shasta, Hotlum Glacier

Note, all images on this page are courtesy of Paul Geissler, intrepid mountaineer, explorer, scientist, and all around nice guy. Even the summit picture of Paul was taken with his own camera.

Shasta, from the Northeast.

It was 114 degrees in Tucson on this trip last July. My opinion is even if it was a "Dry Heat", that's still pretty stinkin' hot. We spent the first day just sitting and melting holes in the snow..

Watching the sun disappear behind the ridge..

The shadow of the mountain, plus an image of the moon!

Geared up for the upper glacier!

Sucking O's.

Joe negotiating the bergschrund below the headwall

A big hole, with teeth!

Above the mixed section.

Paul was belaying me up out of the couloir skirting the headwall. I was feeling the altitude, and my tool placements were reflecting this - I almost impaled the rope! Paul's only comment: "That's OK Joe, it's not my rope!"

Paul, at the top!

Due to a storm we got a bonus day on the hill..

Spindrift coming over the ridge
