public class Color_Button
extends JButton
implements ActionListener

A button that presents a color chooser when clicked. The chosen color is set to the button's background color, and it may be accessed via the getColor() method.

By default, the color chooser is presented with the button itself as the parent component; the chooser is therefore centered roughly over the button when it appears. The chooser's parent component can be changed via the setParentComponent(Component) method.

This component is modeled after a similar component in JMARS, from which much of the code was lifted.

Constructor Detail

Color_Button

public Color_Button(String text,
                    Color color)
Creates a new color button with the indicated text and color. The color is the background color for the button, and it is the current color when the button is clicked. The foreground color is set based on a subjective analysis of the background color: If subjectively bright, the foreground color is set to Color.BLACK; if subjectively dark, it is set to Color.WHITE.

Parameters:
text - the text of the button.
color - the initial background color of the button.

JButton.JButton(String)
Method Detail

getColor

public Color getColor()
Gets the current button color. This color is the button's background color and the color shown in the color chooser.

Returns:
the button color.

setColor

public void setColor(Color color)
Sets the current button color. This color is the button's background color and the color most recently returned from the color chooser.

The foreground color is set to Color.BLACK if the color is subjectively bright; it is set to Color.WHITE if the color is subjectively dark.

Parameters:
color - the new button color.

getParentComponent

public Component getParentComponent()
Gets the parent component for the color chooser. The parent component identifies the parent frame for the chooser; it is the frame containing the component. The parent component's screen coordinates are also used for the location of the chooser when shown.

The parent component may be null, in which case a default, shared frame is used and the chooser is shown centered on the active display.

Returns:
the color chooser's parent component, which may be null.

setParentComponent

public void setParentComponent(Component parentComponent)
Sets the parent component for the color chooser. The parent component identifies the parent frame for the chooser; it is the frame containing the component. The parent component's screen coordinates are also used for the location of the chooser when shown.

The parent component may be null, in which case a default, shared frame is used and the chooser is shown centered on the active display.

Parameters:
parentComponent - the color chooser's new parent component, which may be null.

actionPerformed

public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
Invoked when the button is clicked. The color chooser is shown, with the current getColor() as the the chooser's current color. If the chooser is accepted, the button's color is set; if the chooser is not accepted, no further activity transpires.

Specified by:
actionPerformed in interface ActionListener
Parameters:
e - the action event.
