Instructions for running Open Office on the PIRL systems.
Type the following:
office.
If you get a "command not found", type "rehash", then type "office" again.
If Open Office has already been installed, it starts
Open Office for you. If OpenOffice has not been installed,
then the installation procedure automatically starts.
In that case, follow the pointers below.
Installing Open Office for your PIRL account
There are a series of dialog boxes that you are presented with.
What follows are notes about what to do when each of these
dialog boxes appear.
- Read the release notes, if so inclined. No one is
forcing you to, though.
- Accept the license. Read it, if you wish.
- On the "Enter User Data" screen, fill in as much,
or as little information as you would like.
- On the "Select Installation Type" screen, make sure
that the "Workstation Installation" is selected.
- On the "Select Installation Directory" dialog,
the default location of your home directory and
"OpenOffice.org1.0" is usually fine. In fact, it's
recommended. Let the dialog create the directory.
- Click "Install".
- The "Java Setup" page then asks for what "Java
Development Kit" to use. "/usr/java" is fine, as this
points to a place where we keep the latest jdk (/opt/java/jdk).
Click "OK".
- Openoffice should now install itself for you. Click
"Complete" when it's finished.
Now the path to the OpenOffice software (if you
followed the directions above) should be in
"~/OpenOffice1.0/soffice". The "office" setup script
knows about this path, and will from now on, automatically
fire up OpenOffice for you when you type "office".
Errata
We know about the funny characters in the title bar. Maybe
it's fixed in the next release.
