**NOTE to PICS users: Sinusoidal projection is the only projection
compatable between ISIS and PICS. All files were processed in
ISIS. If you want to reproject in PICS you will have to use the
file that is in sinusoidal projection mentioned below. **

**NOTE** The north and south poles have been "trimmed" off for
the purpose of avoiding any chance of misinterpetation of
erroneous data. High resolution coverage at the south pole was
retained because of the quality of data.

If there are any problems please e-mail tbecker@flagmail.wr.usgs.gov

Quick-look (jpeg) versions of the visible and infrared Europa color images
are in /home/ssi/review as Europa-RED-GRN-VIO.jpg and Europa-968-889-756.jpg.
These were GALSOSed with VICAR and then registered and despiked with ISIS.
I'll upload the individual frames as soon as I find the isis2vic program

Hi Mike,

Ken Klassen and Ron Greely told me you were interested in seeing the =
Europa 2 X 2 mosaic with a high pass filter applied to pull up the =
terminator. I have generated this mosaic, and it is available for ftp =
from the MIPS internal ring: /project/ssi1/joo/tmp/europa.mos_flt_str

Ron seemed to think it looked good, and it's going into the PIO queue for =
consideration to be used for the press conference.

Enjoy,

Hello Liz:

On Rushmore, directory

/export/home/tbd,

there is a new color VICAR image of Jupiter's moon Europa.

The names of the three B/W files are

g1dlr_europa_color_1.red
g1dlr_europa_color_1.grn
g1dlr_europa_color_1.blu

The name of the possible Cat.-B Text caption can be found in file
g1dlr_europa_color_1.txt

We would like to ask you to select this image as a Category B release.

It is very important for us to get a quick answer because Gerhard Neukum
has the possibility to submit it to a big German weekly magazine (named FOCUS)
which might add it to an article about Galileo which will appear next Monday.

Thank you very much in advance for your help, and viele Gruesse,

Hello Mike, Joe, and Ron:

There are three new image "groups" of Europa color vicar images on the Rushmore
              /home/ssi/review

directory. I have put them on Rushmore in agreement and on behalf of Gerhard
Neukum, who is on vacation until early September.

The file names are:

g1dlr_euro_col_2*.* (7 Vicar files + 1 Textfile)
g1dlr_euro_col_3.* (3 Vicar files: red, grn, and blu)
g1dlr_euro_col_4.* (3 Vicar files: red, grn, and blu)

-----

g1dlr_euro_col_2*.*:

These images are proposed to be selected for category B release as a possible
"Europa color week". Possible figure captions are given in the file
G1DLR_EURO_COL_2_WEEK.TXT.

- The first image, which might be released on a Monday, would be
"G1DLR_EURO_COL_2_MON.VIC". It shows a violet image of Europa.
- The "Tuesday frame", G1DLR_EURO_COL_2_TUE.VIC, contains a 1MC filter image.
- On Wednesday, frame G1DLR_EURO_COL_2_WED.VIC shows a color ratio of these two.
- The Thursday frame, G1DLR_EURO_COL_2_THU.VIC, is a NIR filter frame and
  the precursor of
- the Friday frame (G1DLR_EURO_COL_2_FRI.RED, G1DLR_EURO_COL_2_FRI.GRN, and
G1DLR_EURO_COL_2_FRI.BLU for three color channels), which is an approximately
true color frame of this area on Europa. It is a combination of the NIR
image from Thursday for the red channel, the violet image from Monday as
the blue channel, and a 50-50 combination of both used for the green channel.

g1dlr_euro_col_3.*:

Three files, G1DLR_EURO_COL_3.RED, G1DLR_EURO_COL_3.GRN, and
G1DLR_EURO_COL_3.BLU can be combined to a color frame of Europa. The left
part shows a "true" color view of this area, while the right image contains
a combination of three color ratios (1MC/NIR, GRN/VLT, VLT/NIR as the red,
green, and blue channel, respectively). The filter selection for the left
and the right images is similar to the filter selection of our Ganymede
file (GANYCOLOR2.* files) on Rushmore.

g1dlr_euro_col_4.*:

The three files G1DLR_EURO_COL_4.RED, G1DLR_EURO_COL_4.GRN, and
G1DLR_EURO_COL_4.BLU may also be combined to a Europa color frame. The
red channel contains a 1MC, the green channel a NIR, and the blue channel
a VLT frame, all histogram-stretched and filtered. The result is a false
color frame which shows a lot of details on the surface. (This image is
currently my favorite Europa image.)

We would like to offer these images to the SSI Team and feel that they might
be selected as cat.-A or cat.-B releases, or for an upcoming publication.
For the possible case of a selection, we would be happy to provide a draft
for a figure caption.

I have placed two files in Rushmore that show the vague ringed
structure that I talked about in our abstract for the Europa ocean
conference. Each file is in three separate formats for ISIS (.cub),
VICAR (.vic) and tiff (.tiff). Both versions are stereographic with
central coordinates of 25S, 200W. One file is the Flagstaff global
mosaic of Europa reconfigured in a stereographic projection. The
second mosaic has the Galileo four-frame mosaic added in. THESE ARE
VERY CRUDE PRODUCTS. I had wanted to delay distribution until I had
some more cosmetically pleasing products, but there appears to be
some interest in immediately seeing what we have.

The files are in RUSHMORE

The black areas at top and bottom are areas at the poles where we
have no data. The latitude-longitude grid is in 20 deg increments.
There are obvious artifacts in the mosaic that are caused by limbs
and terminators in both the Voyager and and Galileo images. Despite
these artifacts, I believe that you can readily see the bulls-eye
effect. The arcs are caused mostly by triple bands to the north and
by the boundaries between mottled and non-mottled areas to the east.
The center of the bulls-eye is that crackled terrain in the southern
part of the area imaged by Galileo. You can see very distant arcs
near ths north pole and over the south pole. A note of caution on
stereographic projections. While small circles on a globe convert to
circles on the projection, the true centers of the circles are
slightly offset from the apparent centers in the projection

Before releasing this I had wanted to do better processing to bring
out what is in the dark area to the west. This is under way. Frank
Chuang, who recently received his Bachelors in Geology from San Jose
State, is doing the image processing. He is fairly new to the game
but is learning fast.

Dear Ron, and other "Europhiles":

The so far available parts of the 1 micron filter image have been compiled to
a preliminary version of our Europa G2 color frame.

The vicar files g2dlr_euro_prelim3.red, grn, blu
in Rushmore's directory /export/home/tbd

show an enhanced and filtered version with the 1MC filter as the red, the
GRN filter as the green, and the VLT filter as the blue channel. The still
missing data (1 gap in each filter) have been filled by data from the VLT
or GRN filter and appear as B/W stripes in the image.

Short, preliminary description:

The "disappearance" of the mottled terrain in the 1 micron filter that has also
be seen before by HST is obvious. Only the bright crater at 26S, 271W ("Pwyll")
is clearly visible. It shows a "spider-like" appearance, reminding to a
volcano on Earth with rivers running down from the center. Is it possible
that liquid water has created this structure??

After image enhancement, additional features are visible in the 1MC image,
like the dark circular feature near 15S,335W; "1MC-inversed" bands in the
polar regions, only few linea within the mottled terrain, and the outlines of
areas within the mottled terrain that are also brighter than their surrounding
terrain in the visible wavelengths.

The photometric effects of high incidence/emission angles can be seen very
well, too. The higher the incidence/emission angle, the bluer is the
disk of Europa. It might be difficult to extract spectra or albedo measurements
from these images without proper photometric correction.

The mottled terrain shows different color units. The reddest color is seen
near the eastern limb (anti-Jovian side, the area that has been covered by
G1 clear filter imaging), decreasing towards west to rather brownish hues
(in this false color version of the image) at the Jupiter-facing hemisphere.

Interestingly, one of the darker areas in the violet and green frames, the dark
area at the very western edge of the image, is also dark in the 1MC filter
creating a dark-bluish color here, while the mottled terrain appears reddish
brownish. A major cause of this should be the photometric effects, but there is
such a big difference to the surrounding terrain at the east that also the
possibility of different surface materials might be considered.

For the circular feature near 15S,335W, the "moat" around the center is
darker in all three filters than the central material.

So far a preliminary description of the color contents of the G2 Europa
photometry frame.

Hello Ron, Rob, et al.:

On Rushmore's directory /home/ssi/review
the vicar files g2dlr_europa_color.red, grn, blu
(with a size of about 2.6 MB each)

contain two versions of the G2 Europa violet and 1MC filter data: The left
image shows rather "natural" colors, while the frame on the right shows a
false color image where the colors have been somewhat adapted to the ones
that can be found in Paul Geissler's G1 Science Magazine Europa composite.
The green channel of the vicar image is a composite of VLT and 1MC data to
simulate at some degree the missing NIR filter. GRN filter data have not been
used so far because of the data gap close to the most interesting area in the
frame (Pwyll). This will be changed when we know more about the status of
the missing data, probably not before the Ocean Conference. The attempt to
simulate Paul G.'s colors is not affected very much by this because Paul
used the 1MC, NIR, and GRN data for his G1 frame, and the G2 sequence doesn't
contain NIR data at all so that all attempts to create similar colors
cannot be perfect. But, in my opinion, the hues are rather close to the
colors from Paul's G1 frame.

The next e-mail contains a small discussion about what the colors mean and
about a few special features. A suggestion for possible color imaging in E6
will also be given in the next e-mail.

Dear Europhiles:

On Rushmore's directory /home/ssi/review
the vicar files g2dlr_europa_color.red, grn, blu
(with a size of about 2.6 MB each)

contain two new versions of the G2 Europa violet and 1MC filter data: The left
image shows rather "natural" color, while the frame on the right shows a
false color image where the colors have been somewhat adapted to the ones
that can be found in Paul Geissler's G1 Europa composite.

The white and bluish hues in the false color version indicate purer ice,
while the brownish-reddish hues are a property of the mottled terrain,
triple and other bands, maculae, crater interiors (bigger craters like Pwyll),
wedge-shaped bands, etc. and might represent "dirty" ice. The mottled terrain
area on the upper right which has been imaged in color also during G1 seems
to appear somewhat darker/"brownisher" than the mottled terrain at the center
or western latitudes in the G2 image. Therefore, its general appearance is
somewhat brighter in the G2 frame than in Paul G.'s G1 image.

In G1, the northern ("polar") part of the color frame shows a lot of bluish
hues due to "purer" ice. A similar situation also exists in the southern
hemisphere of Europa's trailing side, close to the south pole, and also
partly extending up to mid-latitudes (especially at western longitudes).

Between Pwyll and the south-eastern limb (at about 5-o-clock position), two
additional crater candidates are visible. One is very close to the limb,
and the other is about mid-way between Pwyll and the limb. Both have darker
interiors and a slightly brighter halo, somewhat similar to Pwyll. But for
the crater at the edge, the center is not brownish but rather bluish. Although
the limb-darkening due to photometric properties of Europa might play a role
for the increasing of the blue hue towards the limb, this seems not to be
sufficient to explain this "blue spot". In the VLT image, it is virtually not
visible at all, but in the 1MC frame, it appears as a prominent dark spot.
A possible explanation might be that this blue spot is a younger crater,
forgotten to be covered by frost particles from possible geysir-like eruptions
or whatever is the responsible process for the fact that the 1MC appearance
of Europa's trailing side is so uniform.

Very close to this blue spot, in the north-eastern direction, there is also
a "blue band", which remarkably differs in its spectral behavior from the
surrounding area, e.g. the brownish band very close to it in the north-
eastern direction. It might also be interpreted as beeing a younger feature.

[ Ron and Rob: The area covering Pwyll, the "blue band" and the "blue spot"
might be a nice 4-6-color regional-res. target for E6 imaging. It contains
"regular" south polar ice, mottled terrain and a triple band (Phinaus Linea)
as well as "unusual" "Pwyll-center" and "Pwyll-environment" material, and
  the "bluish stuff". ]

8-bit ISIS cube, created by Cynthia Phillips at LPL / U. Arizona on 11/5/96.

This image merges the Galileo G1 4-frame clear mosaic I did with the
G2 Europa image (image number s0360063913.2 = violet filter; the only
color we currently have a full image for), and the Voyager hi-res and low-res
mosaics from USGS. Pointing has been tied to the Voyager basemap, and
the overall resolution of the image is 4 km/pixel (the hi-res Voyager and
Galileo have been scaled down).

The image has been processed and filtered to enhance geologic features,
rather than preserve photometry. This would have been impossible given
the range of filters involved. The sinusoidal projection was chosen
so that accurate reprojections of any sort can be made using ISIS.

OK...The file has been converted to VICAR and placed back in
rushmore:/home/ssi/review/europa_voygal.sinu.vic

I'm sure Helen knows this, but I should reiterate: isis2vic (like all current
VICAR routines) needs 'librtl.so', a shareable library. I took a quick look on
rushmore and only found the librtl.a (the old library).

One of two things will need to happen in order for Liz to run this program on
rushmore:
1. recompile isis2vic and *statically* link in librtl, or
2. copy librtl.so from coda3 to somewhere on rushmore for use with the
existing isis2vic.

Once one of these are picked, I can e-mail Liz how to use this software. The
instructions are similar, but not identical depending on which solution is
used.

Thanks...(there may be other solutions, but that's my quick analysis of the
situation)

Myche

g2dlr_europa_color.red, grn, blu

Format is vicar. The major changes are that the left, "natural" color image
has been replaced by a "enhanced true color" version by request of ASU,
and for the right ("false color") image, the same filters have been used
as Paul Geissler did for the Europa color image in the Science Magazine.

Subject: RE: G2 Europa release

Hi Rob and Ron:

Following your request, I created "revised" versions of the Europa G2 color
composites. I deleted the old files on Rushmore, the new ones are currently
swimming somewhere over the Atlantic towards JPL. There names will be the
same as previously: g2dlr_europa_color.red, grn, blu.
Directory is /home/ssi/review on JPL's Rushmore.

The following changes have been done:

* False color composite, frame on the right: I now used the "same" filters
as Paul Geissler did, and I feel that it now looks really similar to a
printed version of Paul's G1 Science-Mag frame. I found a way to easily
fill in the missing data in the GRN image just using Photoshop. I bet you
will no longer find the gap, except if you ask me how you can see it in the
color frame...
The "NIR" frame used by Paul for G1 is not existing for the G2 data, therefore
I simulated this filter by combining the 1MC and the VLT filter.

* "Enhanced true color" composite, the frame on the left: "Enh. true col" is
a really nice wording for something that is selled as true but indeed isn't.
In my version, I used the NIR (the simulation), the GRN (with gap fill) and
the VLT (the only unproblematic one) filter frames. Therefore, it is indeed
a "true" color image because the filters that are closest to "true" have
been used. For the "false" color, the red channel is a "full-1MC frame" and
therefore really "false". On the other hand, the left frame is an "enhanced"
image due to filtering and histogram-stretch activities. Take a look at it:
Is it "rather true" or "rather enhanced"? I feel the latter is the case, but
if you worry about this, you might easily do the "Tonwertkorrektur" (Command L)
for this frame in the following way: "0 1.3 255" to balance it towards
"true" and away from "enhanced". The value "1.3 is meant
as "1.3 +-0.1", this is a matter of taste. I already checked this proposed
processing step and found that such an operation will not affect at all the
image quality. Feel free to make such changes.

* Both frames: Both have been rotated by 5 deg counterclockwise, so that North
is up. An arrow indicating the north direction has been added. Both frames

Hi everyone,

The following files have been GALSOSed and stretched. In addition, the data
for c3jpl_eur_wedge1.bw (from SCLK 368639400) arrived in several pieces, so it
has been merged into one final image. The files are available from Rushmore
in the /home/ssi/review directory.

c3jpl_eur_wedge1.bw (SCLK 368639400)
c3jpl_eur_wedge2.bw (SCLK 368639414)

The file c3jpl_eur_wedge3.bw (SCLK 368639426) is on the way.

Subj:	Europa Wedges Craters

A remarkable attribute of the new Europa pictures is the
virtual absence of impact craters (or craters of any kind). There was
debate at the recent Europa Oceans Conference about whether the
10 km diameter "pits" prominent in some portions of our G1 images
were degraded impact craters or, as we proposed (based on size
distributions and the apparent mutual avoidance between pits and
lineaments), endogenic features.

Gene Shoemaker and I agreed that a test would be to see how
many smaller craters there are. If the pits are primarily a
monomodal group of endogenic features, then one would expect far
fewer small impact craters than if there were a power-law-like size
distribution characteristic of impact craters.

With the proviso that the "Wedges" district could be atypical of
the regions studied in G1, the answer seems clear: even small impact
craters are remarkably rare. On the Wedges picture received today,
there are only 2 obvious craters 5 pixels across or larger. I have
plotted a frequency for this "crater count" on the diagram I displayed
at the Oceans conference. It has been placed on Rushmore for you
to look at, in two forms:

For a Postscript version: /home/ssi/review/eurcra.ps
For a GIF version: /home/ssi/review/eurcra.gif

The following caption applies:

Fig. 1. Differential frequencies for pits in near-terminator regions of
Europa from G1 images plus a count from the "Wedges" frame from
C3. Open and closed green symbols indicate two different G1
regions, illustrating typical variations in spatial densities of pits.
(Purple triangles are counts of possibly saturated pits from a small
region; it is speculative if these near-resolution-limit features are
mostly real.) Typical counts from Ganymede (line = Uruk Sulcus,
squares = Galileo Regio) are for comparison. Note very steep size
distribution for larger pits indicating a cut-off in pits larger than 25
km diameter. The roll-off at small sizes may be real, in which case
pits are clustered about a modal size of 8 km, indicative of endogenic
origin; if the roll-off were an artifact of resolution, then the absence
of large pits would be compatible with the hypothesis that they are
mainly an impact population, with loss of larger ones by viscous
relaxation.
However, as shown by the blue diamond, smaller craters seen on
the high-resolution Wedges frame are extremely rare, with a
frequency perhaps two orders of magnitude less than on Uruk Sulcus.
Assuming that the Uruk Sulcus craters are primary impact craters
(and not secondaries) formed after any early bombardment period,
this would imply that the Wedges terrain on Europa is AT LEAST
two orders of magnitude younger than Uruk Sulcus (even younger
given the higher cratering rate expected on Europa due to gravita-
tional focussing by Jupiter).

Subj:	Wedge reconstruction images

Europans,
I have placed eight images of my Wedges reconstruction in rushmore at:
/home/ssi/review/Step.*
or
/home/ryt/Step*.tif

They are tiff files. If you have trouble getting these, let me know.

(If you have comments about any of this please let me know, including
figures, etc.)

What you have in front of you (I assume) are eight images in two sets of
four which track the reconstruction of part of the terrain seen in the C3
Wedges image.

The first set of four is annotated ("*copy"). Bands that were
reconstructed are labeled B, C, and D. Also shown are key features whose
progressive re-assembling marks the stages of the reconstruction as we go
back in time. These features are "The Oblong" O, with parts 1-3, and
"Lineament" L, both traced with a dark line.

The second set of images matches the first but is not labeled. For
simplicity, I refer to the images as 1, 2c, 2f, and 3b.

Image 1) This is the original image showing the scene today. From
superposition, it is clear that the dark NW-trending wedges B and C plus
the dark band A are the youngest of the major bands. D is older. The
reconstruction "closes" B, C and D in that order. (The order B-C was
arbitrary.) The Oblong "O" is broken into three pieces and lineament L
is in at least five segments today.

Image 2c) Band B is closed, plus some related smaller adjustments made to
realign local linear features. Parts 1 and 2 of the Oblong come together
as do two southern segments of lineament L. Note that I closed Band B
fully. A gore begins to develop on the left side (west) of the image
because I moved terrain eastward to accomplish the closure of B. This
makes sense when you look at the Voyager images and see that the blocks
bounded by the wedge-shaped bands in this region have apparently moved
southwest while separating and translating.

Image 2f) Band C closes, removing the second major young wedge-shaped
band. As a result, additional parts of the Lineament L rejoin. It is
only broken now by the branches of B and D. Because younger features are
disrupted the scene gets confusing. (Do not adjust your set.) It is
complicated also by the cut-lines required for the reconstruction. The
features to look for are the piercing points that mark deformation - e.g.
the Oblong and the Lineament. The closure of C required care because the
band splits in the east and the total accommodation on the "tributaries"
must equal that of the main trunk. The gore from image 2c is now wider
along all its length.

Image 3b) Closing band D completes the assembly of Lineament L. Part 3
of the Oblong rejoins parts1 and 2. A small gore remains in the D
alignment, and on the far east side. The west side gore has enlarged.
Again, the full width of band D was utilized, i.e. it was closed all the
way.

There is no way, geometrically, to reassemble the Oblong and the
Lineament without closing the bands all the way. If you close the bands
by a lesser amount, these two features do not re-form coherently. This
can only happen if the bands are bounded by vertical tension fractures
and represent gaps which fill-in somehow. They cannot be areas of crust
that is thinned along listric normal faults or tilt blocks; the bands
could not be fully closed in that case.  (See Golombek and Banerdt, 1990;
Pappalardo and Sullivan, 1996; Schenk and McKinnon, 1989.) I agree with
the Brown memo that the internal ridges may be associated with volcanism
of some type, e.g. sheeted dikes.

By superposition, the Oblong is relatively old terrain. Notice that it
seems to be lower than the bordering lineated terrain on the NW and SE.
Notice also that it contains the distinctive crater. Is the presence of
the crater a coincidence or a consequence of the terrain's longevity?

In the Voyager 2 images, it is hard to tell what the light-toned bands
like Band D are. Here we see that D is an extensional feature, perhaps
analogous to B and C, only older. They all may be structurally like
Thynia Linea (Pappalardo and Sullivan, 1996).

B, C, and D are extensional, but record stress directions that are
different. B and C formed with minimum stress oriented NE; D formed with
it oriented NNW (assuming no polar wander).

I have not yet reconstructed Band A nor the light band branching off D
and between D and A. Band A seems more complex than the relatively
simple B and C and has eluded me so far.
In fact, it may be a strike-slip feature (Schenk and Mckinnon, 1989).

The 35 m/pixel Europa partial frame (s0374685100) is mosaicked
within part of the 630 m/pixel context frame (s0374667300)
on Rushmore:

/home/ssi/review/eur_35_context.vic

A groove lane with 3 strands seen at 630 m/pixel consists of
many finer grooves at 35 m/pixel.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

to Mike Carr: the area about which I asked "are there flows and channels
on Europa?" is the lower left portion of s0374667300, 630 m/pixel. There
is a bewildering array of morphologies, poorly resolved, but including
lobes overlying ridges--for example at sample 305, line 475. The
putative channels are where the ridges appear to have been "washed out",
such as sample 373, line 430. This is only a medium-res context frame,
so we should see similar features (elsewhere on Europa) at much higher
resolution.

Its starting to look like the "flows" seen at 600 m/pixel might

Europaphiles,
Two images of a reconstruction of the broad lineament diagonally crossing
the northern portion of the E4 high resolution mosaic are available in tiff
format on rushmore:
home/ssi/review/E4hiresmos.cp.1.rec.2.tif
and
home/ssi/review/E4hiresmos.cp.1.tif

The first image is after the reconstruction, i.e. the older landscape.
The reconstruction joins the two opposing sides of the lineament along the
prominent midline groove. Digital cuts were made along two other prominent
grooves positioned symmetrically to each side of that midline or along
reasonable extensions of those alignments.
Matchups of older linear features are improved markedly by this
reconstruction.
The reconstruction removes most of the lineament although some
outboard portions are left intact. This may suggest that this version of
the reconstruction is not completely accurate, or that the remaining highland
is a structural feature not formed by the same processes that created
the removed part. Regardless, based on the geometry of the reconstruction,
it is likely that the removed portion of the lineament - the major part - is
extensional in origin.

The second mosaic includes the five images in the pwyll2 mosaic,
merged with a G2 violet frame and two G1 clear-filter images, as
well as the E4 hi-res context frame s0374667300. The bulge on the right
side of the image is due to the fact that the underlying full-disk G2 image
has been reprojected to the sub-s/c point of the E4 images, so valid
G1 data appears to protrude off the edge of the apparent limb, but
actually goes to the edge of the real limb. The files for this mosaic
are:

e4g2g1lpl_pwyll.cub (ISIS format)
e4g2g1lpl_pwyll.vic (VICAR format)

These images have had their pointing adjusted through a limb fit to

have had noise due to radiation hits removed.

Description: Latest version of the 6-frame E6 dark lineament mosaic.
This mosaic includes all the cutout windows played back in pass 2, and
is complete - no gaps! The pointing has been tied to my G2 limb fit
solution, and the images have been orthographically reprojected to the
sub-spacecraft latitude and longitude, and photometrically corrected
(lunar-lambert function, L=0.8).

I've placed a tiff of the merged E6 drklin color image I showed at the
Tucson team meeting on rushmore. It's in /home/ssi/review,
called e6lpl_colordrklin.tiff.

I'm still working on adjusting the colors etc. on this image, but I think
this is a good working version. It can be cropped or enhanced as desired.

Let me know if there are any questions, problems, etc with this image.
I think it would make a great cover.

Let's add this to our Europa products on Flora, okay?
It's similar to one we have there already, but I know that this one

Hello,

the following files have been added Rushmore's /home/ssi/review directory:

C9DLR_Amalthea.vic
C9DLR_GALSATS_100X75KM.vic

  (color)
C3DLR_Callisto_Color_2.vic
C9DLR_CallistoScales.vic
C9Paul_G2Tilmann_Europa.vic
G7DLR_EuropaFeatures_1.vic
G7DLR_EuropaFeatures_2.vic
G7DLR_EuropaFeatures_3.vic

Short descriptions are given below. Enjoy it.
Liz: These images might be used for cat A or B press releases.

Viele Gruesse from Berlin,

Tilmann

------------------

B/w images:

The C9DLR_Amalthea.vic file shows the regular Amalthea circle update, now
including C9 data.

C9DLR_GALSATS_100X75KM.vic shows a comparison of Galilean satellite's
landscapes at a scale of about 180 meters per pixel. Each part is about
100x75 km wide. The Io image (top left) is from Voyager 1 (FDS 16392.27,
but enlarged because the original resolution is only about 400 m/pxl). The
Europa image (top right) is from the E6 dark linea 01 mosaic (out of RIM
s0383713765.2), the Ganymede data (lower left) are from the G7 Nicholson
Regio mosaic (RIM s0389923026.2), and the Callisto part (lower right) is
from C9 crater statistics mosaic (RIMs s0401505500.1 and 526.1). The very
different landscapes of the four GalSats are shown: Io with its
volcanically shaped and partly rather featureless surface, Europa with the
ridges down to the limit of resolution and very few impact craters,
Ganymede with a lot of craters and its tectonically deformed surface, which
appears to show a different style, compared to Europa; and finally Callisto
with its smooth and (in my opinion) extremely beautiful surface, formed by
impact craters, a strange powder, and nothing else(??).

Color images:

The C3DLR_Callisto_Color_2.vic frame is an improvement over the previous
version C3DLR_Callisto_Color_1. It shows Callisto C3 color data "slightly"
enhanced (left), "heavily" enhanced (center), and a false color image,
containing the violet frame, a violet-to-Nir ratio, and "889 absorption"
file for the different channels blue, green, and red.

The C9DLR_CallistoScales.vic shows a comparison of different scales on
Callisto. The scale bar in each of the four parts is 10x different (smaller
or larger) than for the previous or following image. The scales are
10 km/pxl, 1 km/pxl, 100 m/pxl, and 10 m/pxl. The top image is part of a
global Voyager 2 color frame at 10 km/pxl, below this is a part of C3
Asgard at 1 km/pxl (b/w), below this a part of C9 crater data at 100 m/pxl,
and at the bottom a part of the C3 Catena frame (enlarged to 10 m/pxl).

The C9Paul_G2Tilmann_Europa.vic image shows a comparison of the two global
Europa images from Galileo, the G2 and the C9 frames. The G2 image is my
product, while for the C9 frame, the version from Paul Geissler has been
used. The colors of both have been adjusted so that the bluish hues at the
poles look somewhat similar; but it has to be kept in mind that the used
filters for both frames are different (due to data lacks). The "Macula"
called Callanish is visible in both images as a brownish spot. Despite the
different filters, it is obvious that the mottled terrain on the leading
side has a different color compared to the mottled terrain on the trailing
side. The "huge, greyish wedge" to the right of the center of the C9 image
looks unusual. Ron, Rob: This might be a worth target for a closer look on
E25A?!

The G7DLR_EuropaFeatures_*.vic files contain a sampling of 15 different
features and landscapes on Europa, including ridges, triple bands, craters,
and many others. In version "1", the features and a description are shown
in the DLR design. Version "2" is the same without DLR logo. Version "3"
shows the "bones"; Liz: You might cut this into 15 pieces a 380x380 pixels
and fill the Galileo Web page for about half a month with it (if you want
to do so).

E6. The readme is attached: files are available on Rushmore and on
PIRL as indicated.

The pointing / coordinate system used for these images is my released
global basemap version. Look for a new basemap, and redone mosaics,
soon which use an updated RAND pointing / coordinate system.

Let me know if you have any questions or problems with these files.
There's a version with just the high-resolution images, and another
version with them mosaiced into a lower-resolution context frame from

Hello Liz,

following your request, I put a file named

e4dlr_gem_targets.vic

on Rushmore's /home/ssi/review directory that might be used for release
purposes. It is a b/w compilation of eight Europan surface areas at approx.
1.5-2 km/pxl that shows SSI-target examples during GEM orbits E11-E19.
It does not contain any unreleased data: The images are either from G1,
from press-released images from G2 or E4, or from Voyager 2 data.

Short description:

Examples for SSI target areas during GEM, ordered by orbit.

Top row, from left:
- E11; Triple Bands and dark spots ("lenticulae") (from G1 data;
       1.6 km/pxl).
- E12; Conamara Chaos ("raft terrain") (from E4 data; 1.6 km/pxl).
- E14; crater Mannann'an (from G1 data; 1.6 km/pxl).
- E15; Cilix (from G1 data; 1.6 km/pxl).

Bottom row, from left:
- E16; Agenor Linea and Thrace Macula (from Voyager 2 data; 2 km/pxl).
- E17; South polar terrain (from Voyager 2 data; 2 km/pxl).
- E18; Rhadamanthys Linea (from G1 data; 1.6 km/pxl).
- E19; Europa at very high phase angle (simulated image out of G2 data,
      7 km/pxl).

For I25, the only other orbit with Europa geology images planned, the left
("Paul") part of image C9Paul_G2Tilmann_Europa.vic might be used to
complete the collection.

Enjoy it!

I just finished putting the arrows onto the image montage. It is on the
atlas.la.asu.edu server, where you should be able to ftp it over to your
place. I have two versions there, one transferred as MacBinary, and the
other as Raw data. One or the other will work, not sure which, but I
would try this file first:
        e4dlr_gem_targets.tif
That's the one I fetched as Raw data from our Mac. If that doesn't come up
as a viable tiff image, then try the second image:

Subject: E11 gray band reconstruction
Status: R

Graybandophiles,

We have done a quick Photoshop reconstruction of the gray band in the new
E11 Europa regional frames (s0420619252 and 9265). This band is the one
which appears as a distinctive sickle-shaped feature in the G1 Europa
mosaic. Our reconstruction is available on Rushmore for your viewing
pleasure in the /home/ssi/review directory as "e11_brn_grayband.vic".

The reassembled fit of preexisting structures is extremely good, suggesting
complete separation (spreading) has created the feature. It looks like the
reassembled western portion of the band has spread apart in the N-S
direction, and it has rotated by about 8.5 degrees counter-clockwise. The
band's boundaries are remarkably rounded, rather than angular or sharply
cuspate. Generally smooth, lightly striated material fills the band,
presumably formed by extrusion of low viscosity material; rough symmetry of
striations within the band suggest progressive opening. Some younger domes
and high-relief ridges cut the band.

An orthogonally trending ridge in the western image terminates within the
gray band and may be related in origin. Along much of its length, the edge
of the gray band is defined by a narrow delimiting structure, which is a
ridge in some instances and a trough in others. In the G1 Europa mosaic,
this gray band seems to cut another N-S trending gray band; this older gray
band is seen at high-res as the N-S set of lineaments that intersects the
E-W gray band along the boundary of the two Galileo images.

To the east, the boundaries of the gray band do not close in the same
direction as the reconstructed portion we have analysed. When playback is
complete, it will be possible to determining the pole(s) of opening for the
constituent portions of this band.

Dear friends of the GEM, 24-NOV-1998

last Sunday's E18 flyby of the Galileo spacecraft was its 10th close
Europa flyby since the beginning of the nominal tour in 1995. The new frame
on Rushmore's /home/ssi/review directory,

e18dlr_gll_flyby.tiff

illustrates this celebration event, that also marked Galileo's very last
targeted dayside Europa flyby and the most northern pass over the Europan
surface. The frame shows the spacecraft busily imaging intriguing
Rhadamanthys Linea which might be a "not-yet evolved" or "baby" Triple
band. Just minutes before, Galileo passed over heavily mottled terrain, an
area that is believed to be geologically younger than the heavily ridged
terrain which can be seen in light-bluish hues to the upper left.

Over the horizon, as seen from the spacecraft, Io and Jupiter are rising.
Io, the smaller of these two celestial footballs, is known as the most
active volcano body in the solar system and target for Galileo's two
suicidal flybys in fall next year. Jupiter, the largest and most massive
planet of the Solar System, holds all these circling bodies (including
Galileo) together for the purpose that flight engineers on Earth are
able to repeatedly target the spacecraft in a scientifically and
public-outreachly useful manner. It might also be the planet that will
guzzle the Galileo orbiter possibly some millenia after end-of-mission,
currently scheduled for January 2000. (Jupiter already ate Galileo
part 1 - the probe - in December 1995.)

Dear Europaphiles,
The wide, EW-trending "band" near the bottom of the revised E11 high res
mosaic by Cynthia Phillips reconstructs nicely. The reconstruction is
unambiguous because older lineaments trend at various orientations. The
actual relative motion was right-oblique. The right-lateral component is
9.7km, the dilational component is 12.8km, and the total oblique distance
is 16.1km. The reconstruction involved only a translation.
I have posted a "Not ready for real time" version on:

and

Thanks to Greg Hoppa for noticing the possible reconstruction, and Rob and
Herb for getting the rest of the image.

Hi Bob et al.,

Preliminary versions of the Agenor color image from E12 are on pirl
as /galileo3/review/Europa/e12_glocol.cub and in jpg format at url
http://pirl.lpl.arizona.edu/hiips/Europa_Color/E12/. I have not yet
been able to navigate them (they're not yet in the ISIS spice table)
but will do so as soon as possible. An interesting new observation is
that Agenor has a relatively low 968/GRN ratio! - I guess the Icarus
lineaments paper is due for revision already...

 Dear Colleagues,

We have put a Mercator mosaic of 11ESREGMAP01 (map scale = 0.22 km/pxl) on
rushmore. The file is located in:

 /home/ssi/review

File name is dlr_e11regmap.mos (Vicar format with map labels).

For those who have an account at ASU on atlas.la.asu.edu, the file may also be
retrieved from directory rhea:[wagner.to_rushmore]. Protection is open.

The mosaic was enhanced with a highpass filter of 251x251 filter box size.
If it appears to dark on other screens, use a logarithmic stretch to make it
look brighter (e.g. min=0 max=255 curve = about 100 - 300).

With the LPSC stress being over sooner or later, I hope I also can provide this
mosaic in context with a medres VGR/GLL mosaic until Friday !

Enjoy and best regards ! -- Roland Wagner

Hello, Europaphiles...

It turns out that Galileo was moving fast enough while shuttering the 9
m/pixel E12 Conamara Chaos mosaic that one can see stereo topography in the
overlap regions of consecutive frames. So far, we have only returned the
bottom halves of the 5 frames in this sequence, and of those, only the
first two have overlap. (The frames are linked top right corner to bottom
left corner.)

This is important from a downlink planning standpoint, because we will want
to play back all of these overlap regions to get the maximum area covered
by stereo data. This does not change the current plan, but we will
certainly want to avoid cutting these overlap areas if downlink gets
tighter.

If you want to check out a preliminary red-green version of the stereo
image (red is the left channel), download the file Chaos_stereo.tif from
the gllpeople folder on ganymede.geo.brown.edu
login = gllpeople
password = ssinims

Most of this small area is the top of an intact block with parallel ridges,
and in the northern corner, there is a small glimpse of the lowlying matrix
between the blocks. A small bright cluster of craters (probably Pwyll
ejecta) overlies both terrain types.
Enjoy!

 Dear Colleagues,
We have put three preliminary stereo products of 12ESCHAOS01 on rushmore.
Directory is /home/tyr/E12_stereo. The files are:
 (1) dlr_e12chaos_stereo1.pict
---------------------------------
The file shows a perspective view of a preliminary terrain model derived from
two overlapping frames (S0426271900 and S0426271913) of Conamara Chaos
(12ESCHAOS01). The file was saved in PICT-Format under Photoshop 3.0.

 (2) dlr_e12chaos_dtm1.hlf
-----------------------------

This is a digital terrain model with a ground pixel size of 10 m. The actual
ground pixel resolution of the DTM is probably not better than 50 m (best
guess). The height accuracy is better than 30 m in most parts of the terrain
model.

The file is in standard Vicar format (halfword).

 (3) dlr_e12chaos_ortho1.byt
-------------------------------

This is the ortho-image derived from the terrain model (2) and from SSI frame
S0426271900.

The file is in standard Vicar format (byte).

The high res sequence in the wedges region included images
that allowed stereo reconstruction over several square
kilometers. We have created stereo pairs and placed them on
rushmore in:

/home/ssi/review/
  e12_wedge_left.tif
  e12_wedge_right.tif

The dominant structure in this region is a 1 km wide
symetrical ridge system (Class 2 in the ridge taxonomy
of Greenberg et al.). According to our model, Class 2
ridges form during diurnal extrusion of crushed ice, while
incomplete extrusion rachets open the underlying crack
in the crust. See our Icarus and LPSC submissions for more
details on this model.

Subject: new DLR products on rushmore
                                                          Berlin, 6-Feb-1998
 Dear colleagues,
We have put several stereo products on rushmore into /home/ssi/review :

 (1) E12 wedges stereo
-----------------------

 - File e12wedge0102_dtm.hlf Vicar image, halfword format

The DTM was created with frames s0426272821 (wedge_02), and
    s0426272639, s0426272642 and s0426272646 (wedge_01). The DTM will be
completed as soon as pass 2 playback is terminated.

    Pixel resolution is 14 m/pxl.

 - File e12wedge0102_ortho.byt Vicar image, byte format

This file is an ortho-photo mosaic derived from three wedge_01 images.
    Resolution is also 14 m/pxl.

 - File e12wedge0102_ortho.pict Pict format

Here are some preliminary observations based on the DTM:

    - Covered area is about 14 km x 4 km.
    - Height accuracy is better than 10 m.
    - Terrain A showing a NW-SE structural trend is about 100 m lower than
the surrounding NE-SW trending ridge R1.
    - The trough T cutting through terrain B in N-S direction is about 60 to
80 m deep (with respect to B) and has slopes up to 20 deg at the east-
      facing wall.
    - Ridge R2 is about 80-100 m higher than the surrounding terrain. Slopes
are up to 16 deg (east-facing wall). The "true" slopes may be some
      degrees steeper.
    - There seems to be a general smooth slope down from east to west (average
height difference is about 200-300 m).

File wedges_e12_ana.vic Vicar image, byte format, colour, BSQ

For this preliminary anaglyph image of E12 wedges portions of wedge_02
(green channel) have been manually adjusted (for resolution, geometry)
to fit onto the corresponding wedge_01 images (red channel). The
resulting images have been mosaicked.

 (2) E12/E6 Pwyll stereo
-------------------------

File Pwyll_ana.vic Vicar image, byte format, colour, BSQ

Preliminary anaglyph image of Pwyll crater were s0426268700.4 image (green) has
Both images have been geometrically altered.

Subject: e12 mosaics on rushmore

Howdy all!

I've put three e12 mosaics on rushmore in /home/ssi/review:

(1) e12pwyll.vic -- orthographically reprojected with north up at 0.040
m/pixel (the larger file sizes make better photographic reproductions (less
degraded looking). This file is 8.5 megaBYTES.

(2) e12_2pwyll.vic -- a smaller version of the above mosaic showing the
location of the imageon the e2photom disc imaged on G2. Only 1.57 megabytes.

(3) e12_6chaos.vic -- the five e12 chaos pass-1 frames set into context in a
portion of the e6 bright plains 01 mosaic; orthographically reprojected to
0.015 m/pixel. The e12 hires frames are set into the e6 context, not
registered to it. 7.8 megabytes.

Due to the large sizes of these files, I will delete them from rushmore first
thing Tuesday morning.

Cheers,

Klem

I have made a slightly different version of the Pwyll stereo images.
The images are located in:

/home/ssi/review/
pwyll_e6.cub (right image)
pwyll_e12.cub (left image)

pwyll_stereo.tif (for use with red-blue glasses with red on the left)

Both images are orthographic reprojections centered on
-1.715 latitude 273.55 longitude with a resolution of 126 m/pixel.

2 more e12 mosaics are available of rushmore /home/ssi/review:

(1) g12glgmsh.vic -- the pass 1 & 2 ganymede gilgamesh basin
orthographic reprojection -- 6.86 megabytes

(2) e12_3wedges.vic -- this is a composite of the e12wedges01,
e12wedges02, e12wedges03 (registered together) stuck to (not
registered but it looks good except for the upper right two
frames of 02) the e3wedges image. All of these have been
reprojected orthographically to 0.056 km/pixel. --8.46 meg.

I have a version without the e3wedges background at 0.028
km/pixel available upon request.

Due to their large size, these images will be deleted from
rushmore early tue morning (AZ time).

Team,
we put a new version of our Pwyll red-blu anaglyph image on RUSHMORE
located in ssi_review, where a map projection has been applied. It's
in VICAR format and named

	e6e12_pwyll_orth_anagl_blue.vic

In addition, there is a color-coded stereo model of Pwyll as seen
under a 45 deg angle (same as we put in a b/w version on RUSHMORE last
friday); changes, of course, can be applied, in case a different
color table should be applied, or the viewing angle or the hight
exaggeration should be modified. Filename on ssi_review is

	pwylln_color_new.vic

Any comments or suggestions appreciated!
