Figure 9: The "mitten" chaos area in the RegMap02 region (235m/pixel resolution). The mitten is 100 km across, comparable in size to Conamara (see Fig. 3 for a comparison in a global context). Based on lighting, the chaos area appears bulged up, with the adjacent terrain dipping down toward the chaos matrix. Along the southwest side, the dipping adjacent terrain has cracked off of the rest of the crust. See Figs. 16e and 18a for a schematic interpretation of these typical characteristics of chaos areas.
